Coming to a Close

We left off with Chris comparing us to birds stuck in a cage. We purchased some snacks and continued the last of the conversation.

After we enjoyed our coffee and snacks, Katie questioned: “How does God both love and judge at the same time?”

A Visit to the Doctor

Chris replied, “Many people wonder the same and get confused by this, but the love of God is in complete harmony with His judgement. For example, suppose you have health issues. You go to your doctor and expect an honest assessment of your health. Instead, he tells you that you are perfectly healthy and assures you not to be concerned.

However, with his knowledge, he knows there is a serious issue that needs to be addressed by a specialist immediately; he says nothing because he doesn’t want to worry you. Wouldn’t that be awful that he didn’t tell you the truth?

As a doctor, he is obligated to tell you the truth about your state of health so that you get proper treatment for a chance to heal.

It is the same when God tells us about our spiritual well-being. Like a doctor, God will examine our lives and give us an honest and righteous “diagnosis” or judgement, if you will.

It is often hard to hear of any health concerns, and it’s like that with our spiritual life also. The proper diagnosis and treatments are necessary for you to be restored spiritually to the same condition mankind once had before Adam’s disobedience. Katie, I hope you understand what I’m trying to explain.”

Katie nodded, “I suppose it does; it definitely makes me rethink my view about God’s judgment.”

A Proper Diagnosis

Chris continued to explain more carefully, “God is love, that is why He points out the ‘rotten spots that decay the whole apple’. He is our righteous Judge, and that is wonderful.

But He is much more than that. He is also the Healer who will heal us from all our diseases and trouble.

Treating the Disease

This is where the Carpenter of Nazareth entered the scene, the person Jesus Christ. As I said before, the Trinity “rolled up their sleeves” to solve the problem of sin. He cleaned up the mess mankind brought upon itself.

Jesus healed the lame, the blind, the sick, and he raised people from the dead. Finally, He went to the cross at Calvary, where He dealt with all sin.

Yours, Katie, and Herman’s, and yours, Jolien.”

Chris paused for a moment and sighed, “and yours, Chris.” Referring to himself.

Everyone pondered that for a little while.

Finally, Chris broke the silence and quoted Isaiah 53:6,

“All we like sheep have gone astray. We have turned, everyone, to his own way. And the Lord has laid on Him, the iniquity of us all.”

A Deep Connection

“There is no greater love found anywhere in the entire universe,” Chris declared, “God’s judgement and His love is demonstrated on the Cross at Calvary through the person of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Saviour of the world!”

Chris continued, “We all need to pray that God opens our eyes to capture the depth of that scene, 2000 years ago.”

I sensed the presence of a fifth Person among us right there on the train, and He connected all four of us, as we all felt the same presence. The Holy Spirit moved us, and I couldn’t explain it. We were strangers but had a relationship through Him.

I felt moved and uttered a silent prayer in my heart, ‘Thank you, Lord, for what you have shown to me in this hour.’

Jolien remarked, “This is wonderful stuff!”

“I’m glad you stuck around to hear me out”, Chris replied.

WWJD

Then Chris noticed a bracelet with‘ WWJD’ on Jolien’s wrist and asked, “What does that mean?”

“Oh, that’s something new,” Jolien said. “It stands for ‘What Would Jesus Do’, and it reminds me that I should think about what Jesus would do when I’m faced with a difficult situation.”

“I see. Does it help?” Chris asked.

“Sometimes, but I find it difficult to follow an example that has set the bar so high, I already know I will fail,” Jolien replied.

“Oh my dear!” said Chris, “To follow Him and try to imitate Him is like a parrot repeating words, but the parrot has no idea what the words mean.

It is better to remind yourself of ‘What Will Jesus Do’. Let Him work in you, and you will find that He will do it for you. As a result, you will start reaching that impossibly high bar. Way different, right!?”

Jolien smiled and nodded in agreement.

And Then There Were Two

At that moment, the train slowed down and approached the next station in Amersfoort. A beautiful city in the middle of the Netherlands. The two young women stood up to leave. Jolien shook Chris’ hand and smiled big.

“Thank you so much for this conversation!”

“Thank him,” pointing at me, Chris continued, “He started it. A bit awkward, but we had a good hour together.”

“Indeed!” agreed Katie.

Looking out the window, I saw that the girls now on the platform embraced each other. Chris and I were happy to see the two young women continuing their life journey.

Now that Chris and I were alone, I felt that I could ask him a personal question, something I had struggled with for a long time.

“My wife and I gave our lives to Jesus, and we want to be used by God for His purpose,” I started.

Chris looked at me and told me that it certainly was a noble thing to do, but he had a different view on the word “use.”

“Do you have any kids?” he asked.
“I have four.”
“That’s great!” he continued, “Would it be appropriate for you and your wife to be excited for your kids to grow up so you can ‘use’ them for your good? Certainly not! You don’t ‘use’ your kids, but you have a relationship with them as they grow up.

You teach them what is right and wrong. Sometimes they disagree, or they disobey because they don’t like it. But as they grow more mature, they will look back and thank you for what you’ve taught them. You have a full relationship with them based on love.

You will not be ‘used’ by God; He is our Father. It is a family relationship.

Religion and politics want to use you for their programs and ideas. But, keep in mind that Jesus was never part of any religious or political movement,” Chris smiled.

Again, the train slowed down and approached another station. I politely excused myself to use the washroom.

Last Stop: Emmen

When I returned to my seat, Chris was gone, but he left a little note that read;

“Thank you so much for this opportunity, I wish I could stay longer, but this was my stop. It was a real pleasure. Love, Chris”

Amazed, I sat down—one more stretch. I leaned back, recalling the last hour and the new ‘scenery’ explored. We saw mountain tops and valleys. I learned a lot.

I almost forgot why I took the train in the first place, the job interview. I never did take that job, but it was worth the trip 100%.

Once I arrived at my destination in Emmen, my wife met me at the station to pick me up. She listened with excitement as I shared with her all that had happened that day.

Some people ask me, “Herman, is this a true story?”

With which I reply,

“Absolutely, it’s just not real.”

God bless you all!

Going on A Journey

Last time, I told you about Chris, who would take us on a journey as we were on the train. In this next post, I will recall where we went and what we explored.

The Journey Begins

We had no idea where Chris would take us. We looked at each other and questioned where is this coming from. We were definitely involved with someone who knew what he was talking about

“Since you asked Jolien,” continued Chris. How can it be that there is war and so much violence, and on the other side, you need to believe that God is love? Those don’t line up with each other. And Herman tried to explain it. I felt a bit uncomfortable just trying…

Chris just kept on going: “Jolien, I also have a question for you. Do you believe all we see around us is created by God? “

“Absolutely,” answered Jolien, and Katie nodded in confirmation.

“That is a good start,” said Chris, “I never understood the Big Bang Theory anyway. It’s as if someone wants a new dining set. He buys some wood and puts it in the backyard overnight. During the night, a big storm comes. And in the morning, he opens the door, and voila, the new dining table is complete with chairs, freshly sanded and painted in the desired color. Come on, guys… That doesn’t work for me. It’s a fairy tale.”

The girls looked at each other, and Katie whispered, “See, I told you last week in science class that we had an argument with the teacher about creation.”

She looked and smiled at Chris. “I like your point of view on the subject.”

What Does Love Have to Do With It

“Excuse me,” I said, “but what does your point of view have to do with Jolien’s questions. God is love, and why is there so much evil in the world.”

“I am glad you bring this up, Herman. You know a lot of people have the wrong thought about God, and maybe you do as well.“

He looked around at each of our faces and continued. “God is holy and wholly different than we humans. The problem is that many folks try to grasp some sense of who God is, by taking the best version of themselves, projecting that to a certain degree, putting in all the goodness they can perceive, which often isn’t much, and then calling that ‘God.’ And while I’ve seen a noble effort, the truth is, that it falls pitifully short of who God really is. God is not merely the best version of us that you can think of. He is way more than that. Above and beyond all that you can ask or think.”

“Hmm, interesting,” said Jolien, “but to me, they are just words. They don’t make much sense.”

“And still, Jolien,” Chris continued, “Guess what? He still wants to be known. Not only as the Creator but far more than that.”

He said it with such a small and tender voice that listening to it, I felt eager to find out more. At this point, we stopped at a train station in Zwolle. It was quite busy here, too. A lot of people coming and going.

The City of Zwolle, Overijsel

Can We Enjoy Life?

“Woah,” said Chris, “You see that billboard over there?”

He was pointing at a huge board on the platform.

“That is my favorite soccer team.” On the billboard, we saw the Dutch National team with great players like Frank Rijkaard, Ronald Koeman, Marco van Basten, and Rund Gullit (I love his hair, by the way).

“Are you a soccer fan?” Katie asked with unbelief.

“Absolutely,” said Chris, “Anything wrong with that?”

“No,” I replied, “but I was not expecting such enthusiasm from you because…

Chris interrupted me, “Do you think that we have to just sit in a dusty corner at home, wrestling and murmuring about the good and bad in life? And one day, when we go to heaven, it will all be better?

That’s maybe how you look at it, Herman. But watching a soccer game is just fine, as long as you keep things in perspective. Don’t make the players an idol, and just enjoy the game!”

“I love listening to John Denver, especially the song ‘Country Roads, Take me Home.’”

Chris was whistling the song as if he composed the song himself.

“I am very fond of him, but to me, he is just like anyone else. Ever heard the expression, ‘We are in the world, but not of the world?’ When you walk away from things you really like, without a problem, you are a free man. ‘So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.’” (John 8:36)

Jolien said: “Isn’t that a verse from the Bible?”

“Bingo!” Chris replied, “the young man from Nazareth 2000 years ago, covered in sawdust, helping his father in the workshop, said it. Jesus Christ was His name.

“That’s what I thought,” said Jolien with a smile on her face, thinking about quoting Bible verses.

A Painful Home Life

Although, she grew serious as well. You could see that she had difficulty expressing the pain and sorrow she was about to share.

“I came from a strongly religious family. We never missed church gatherings or other special meetings from our church. Everything looks fine on the outside, and my parents do their best to present themselves well. But I know things are not good at home. It really hurts. My father drinks a lot and fights with my mom when he comes home late. I can sometimes hear hit my mom when I am in my bedroom.

I cannot understand how God can be love, and I see all this trouble and sorrow in my family. Not to speak of all the violence and wars going on in the world.”

With tears in her eyes, she grasped for Katie’s hand.

The Question of Evil

“Jolien,” Chris started, “I am so sorry to hear all this, my dear. But I still think you have the wrong picture of the nature of God. Instead, this is what you should take with you in your journey of life. Ask yourself this question: ‘Do you believe that God is only good?’

I know deep in your heart that you don’t believe it.

You think that God orchestrates all the evil in the world. He does not, my dear. He is only good. He is only light; there is no darkness in Him. And one of the jewels of His character is love!

Darkness is the absence of light, and hate is the absence of love. Evil is the absence of good.

When you turn on the light in a dark room, the darkness disappears, right?

We, of course, all agreed with that statement.

“So, you say that God doesn’t orchestrate the evil, but when I get punished through circumstances by God…” Jolien started.

“Woah, Woah, wait,” Chris interrupted, “See you have a wrong picture about God and think He is there to punish you.

When you do wrong in life make bad choices (sin), it carries out the destruction itself, my dear. It is another side of the coin.

If we want to find the real cause of the evil in the world, we need to go back to the very beginning, when the first man was put in the Garden of Eden, which is the presence of God, by the way.

The first man chose independence instead of a relationship, and because of that, all hell broke loose. Adam had to face the consequences of his choice.

Never blame God for the evil around us and in us!

No woman or man is immune to this evil, sadness, and mess.

Tickets Please

At this point, the conductor came to see our tickets.

“Good morning, everyone, have a great time together?” he asked.

“Wonderful,” said Chris, “Do you need my ticket?”

“Yes, please,” was the reply.

My mind was still mulling over what Chris had said. How was it possible to meet someone like this? All four of us did have a wonderful time, where we could be open and honest, even though I started it all with an awkward question for the girls.

“Come on, sir,” the conductor said to me, “I don’t have all day.” I quickly grabbed my train ticket and gave it to him.

He stamped my ticket and grumbled, “I have three more train carriages to check before we arrive at the next station.”

He stamped the tickets, and we continued the conversation.

Clipped Wings

“God created us to depend on Him and have a relationship with Him so that He can express His love toward us,” Chris said, “Love always leaves a significant mark.

When mankind chose independence in Adam, it got all messed up. Adam chose to go his own way.

But instead of scrapping all of creation, the Trinity rolled up their sleeves and got right into the middle of that mess. That is what God did through the carpenter of Nazareth, Jesus Christ.”

Jolien, Katie, and I were hanging on every word. Trying our best to follow Chris’ train of thought.

“We are created to be loved,” Chris continued, “to have a relationship with our Creator. Birds, at least most of them, are created to fly, right? But if you clip the wings, the bird is grounded. It limits the ability to fly.”

Chris paused to let us think about this statement.

“We,” he finally continued, “are created to be loved. So, for us to live as if we are unloved is a limitation.”

I nodded my head, not so much in agreement but more to show him that I was listening.

“Living unloved by God is like clipping a bird’s wings and removing its ability to fly. If the problem is left unresolved for a long time, the bird starts to forget that it was created to fly in the first place.

You know what, Jolien? You are looking at God through a knothole of your pain. You will see so little of Him and who He really wants to be for you.

“Sir, is this a flying lesson?” Katie said. She said with a big smile and an open mind.

“You can call me Chris. No sirs, please. And maybe, yes. Let’s fly together and have fun. I love this conversation, and Herman, I liked the way you started it. A bit awkward.

We all laughed, even though I still had some mixed feelings.

A vendor with some snacks came by. Chris and I bought a coffee while the girls treated themselves to a chocolate bar.

If you are curious how this conversation continued, tune in next time.

God Bless you!

Next Stop: Meppel

Last week we took a step back in time to when my daughter fell off her bike and broke her leg. As a result, I had to take the train to an interview.

On that train ride, I had an unforgettable experience.

Keep reading to find out what happened!

First Stop: Meppel

As you will recall, we left off with me standing on the platform, waiting to board the train. After about 10 minutes, the train arrived, and I found a seat by the window.

Two young ladies sat down across from me. They were likely students around 17-18 years old. They were joking and giggling the entire time, which is typical for that age.

After about 5 minutes, we arrived at our first stop: Meppel. The name was announced but as usual, it was hard to understand. Instead, I saw the sign as we rolled into the station. After that, the train got a little busier as we neared bigger cities.

Serious Tones

The ladies, at this point, switched their conversation over to a more serious tone. As time went on, they started to speak louder and louder.

At a certain point, I even knew their names, Jolien and Katie, as they were deep in conversation. The smiles had disappeared.

An Additional Passenger

Suddenly a 50 or so year-old man, wearing jeans and a blazer, appeared beside me and asked, “Can I sit here, sir?

I replied with an “Absolutely, no problem.”

I grabbed my bag, and he took a seat.

In the corner of my eyes, I saw that he was carrying a briefcase and wearing runners.

He had a friendly smile and introduced himself as Chris. I replied with my name and moved closer to the window to enjoy the view and give him some space.

The green pastures the Netherlands is known for flash past me. A few cows and farms were in view. It was as if it was a beautiful painting that was everchanging.

A Heated Conversation

The conversation of the two ladies across from me became more heated by the minute. As a result, I couldn’t help but overhear the majority of the conversation.

The one we know as Katie was complaining about her weekend. She was at a party and came home after midnight.

“It’s always the same,” she said, “My parents always make a comment, complaining that I come home late and wondering where I’ve been. I’m never allowed to do what I want.”

At that moment, something stirred inside me, and before I knew it, I said, “Well, Katie, that is pretty normal that your parents are worried about where you are hanging out on the weekends? Besides, from your conversation, it became evident that you were both raised religiously.”

Immediately I felt the eyes of the entire train car on me. A dozen eyes stared at me, and a few people turned around.

I felt myself sink deeper and deeper. It’s as if I had pulled on the emergency brake.

Awkward Silence

The ladies stopped talking after my interruption. Thoughts were racing through my mind. Should I apologize?

Instead of talking, both Jolien and Katie were staring at me with open mouths. All three of us were shocked by what had happened.

If I had the “abilities” of David Copperfield, I would’ve teleported to a different train car. But wishing doesn’t change a thing, and I had to face reality.

Thankfully, Jolien broke the silence. “Sir,” she said, “Can I ask you a question? You got yourself involved in our conversation, which I’m ok with, but if you are one of those, maybe you can tell me.”

She continued with, “And please don’t bombard me with verses, although I do respect the Bible, but I do find it difficult to understand at times.”

She then asked me the question, “How come throughout the entire Bible, God’s love is being told, just like the text ‘For God so loved the world.’¹”

She smiled at that as she caught herself reciting a verse.

She continued, “Why do such horrible things happen in the world? If God is love, why does He allow these things to happen? If He is all-powerful, He can stop these things.”

She said the last with a trembling voice.

A Cool Evening Breeze

I saw many emotions cross her face. On the one hand, I saw anger and confusion; on the other hand, I saw frustration, pain, and sadness.

In the meantime, Katie had recovered from the shock and slowly grabbed Jolien’s hand. The atmosphere changed.

I saw in a quick flash that Jolien was wearing a bracelet. It had four letters. However, I didn’t bring it up.

I tried to concentrate on the answer to the question she asked me. Two things were certain in my mind.

One: God is love.

Two: The suffering in the world is immense.

Why did I say something? How could I be so stupid to get myself involved?

They saw that I was struggling to find the correct answer.

Many believe in “positive thinking,” where they just ignore the bad things in life and show the world just the goodies. It’s like having a garden full of beautiful flowers and don’t deal with the weeds.

The outcome would be obvious.

I could have started speaking about that, given them peace of mind, ignore the bad things and only think of the good things.

However, this wasn’t the right answer for this conversation.

I started with a “Well, you know…” and continued with, “God’s love and the evil in this….”

At that moment, a voice beside me said, “Can I partake in this interesting conversation? I figured I’d ask first. It seems polite.”

My face immediately turned red from embarrassment. I felt like a ripe tomato in a garden, ready for harvest.

Chris had listened to the conversation attentively. He, of course, had heard the ladies speak quite loudly and had noticed my frustration. Or so I thought.

The conversation continued as a cool evening breeze on a hot summer day. Chris was in the driver’s seat. All three of us now became the passengers allowed to travel with him.

He would bring us to beautiful places that we had never seen before. At least, I hadn’t. So, it was as if he said… “Don’t worry; it’s a free ride!”

God bless you!

Come back next time to visit the places he brought us.

Down Memory Lane

The year was 1990. It was early spring, and my wife and I had just moved into a new home across town. We were living in the Netherlands at this time, so a move across town seemed like a move across the world.

At this point, we had four kids: two boys, William¹, our oldest, and Marcus, our youngest. The two beautiful young ladies were in the middle, each two years apart, Jenna and Grace.

An Early Spring Morning

One morning, I decided to run some errands. I stepped into the car and turned the key in the ignition. Unfortunately, when I turned the key, instead of hearing the motor kick in, I heard some sputtering coming from under the hood.

So, of course, I opened it up and stared at the inside of the car. As if I had any notion of what was wrong. I must confess, I am not very knowledgeable in the mechanics of vehicles.

At this point, I had attracted the attention of the two oldest kids.

One of them asked: “Not working, dad?”

I answered with a “Nope, but let’s take a look.”

Fairly early on, it became clear that I shouldn’t pretend that the problem would be fixed soon.

But as soon as I closed the hood of the car, my new neighbor tapped me on the shoulder.

“Car trouble?” he asked.

I nodded yes, and told him that I didn’t know why. He clearly knew more than me, which became evident when he opened the hood up again. A few minutes later, the car was running better than before!

I was grinning from ear to ear and thanked him. “Better is a neighbor nearby than a brother far away!” This is a saying taught to kids in the Netherlands, from a wise ancient Book². The Dutch take this to heart and it is quite evident in how they interact with each other in the community.

Running Errands

Once the car was running again, I took the two oldest and went ahead with my errands. I was waiting for a letter from a company I applied to earlier.

The company was about an hour away and was looking for a Production Manager. I was pretty interested in the position and was pleasantly surprised to see the letter inviting me to an interview the following week.

An Unfortunate Weekend

Come Saturday afternoon, and I was lost in a good book while the kids were playing outside. Rinkje was preparing us some lunch when suddenly Jenna came bursting through the door.

“Mom! Dad! Something terrible happened!” she screamed. We didn’t hesitate, and within moments, we were outside.

We saw Grace, our little girl, buried under a pile of bikes and one of my other kids. Apparently, she went down the hill, and one of the other kids fell on top of her. I saw right away that her leg was broken.

I carefully took her inside and called the doctor. Within moments, he confirmed that she indeed had a broken leg; more specifically, her femur was broken. We were sent to the hospital, and she had to stay there for six weeks with her legs positioned up to allow her femur to heal properly.

Change of Plans

Of course, this called for a change of plans for the whole family. However, I was still able to make it to my interview.

Instead of taking the car my neighbor fixed, I decided to take the train. This allowed Rinkje to visit Grace in the hospital, and I could still make my interview.

Time for the Interview

The day had come, and Rinkje brought me to the train station. The kids came too. We didn’t have much opportunity to say goodbye; parking wasn’t available.

Everyone a quick kiss, and I reluctantly headed to my train. After all, who looks forward to an interview?

I asked myself how the day would go as I got myself seated for a 1-hour train ride. And I’ll tell you what, it was one of the richest and most interesting experiences of my life. The train ride could’ve lasted the entire day if I had any say in it.

The New Harry

My recent posts talked about Harry, the moving truck of Sentinel Storage. Slowly but surely, the moving truck turned into a nice-looking RV.

We spent many nights painting and sanding to ensure that the job was done right.

Safety First

Now that the outside was done, we had to tackle the inside. One of the items on the checklist was electrical. Electricity is one of those things that we can attempt ourselves, but is it really the right call?

A big task like wiring an entire camper is best left for the professionals. So instead of DIYing this task, we hired a licensed electrician to get the job done.

COVID Strikes Again

COVID put a lot of plans on hold, but thankfully, this time, it worked in our favour. One of the bay doors at our storage facility was broken, and because supply was low due to COVID, the door was out of commission for a while.

This allowed us to park the camper inside, and we were able to work in a warm environment.

One Step at a Time

Once the electrician wired the RV, we were able to finish the interior. We bought a lot from Amazon since the delivery time was reliable and the return policy easy.

The first thing we installed was the bed so that we can have a comfortable spot during our travels. Next were the cupboards to store the needed items for any vacation.

My Motto: Keep Working Until It’s Perfect

My wife was by my side every step of the way. She supported me in the good and the bad, and believe me; there were some moments when I wondered what I started.

But I had to keep working; I couldn’t leave it unfinished. I strive for perfection in everything in life, and this was no exception.

The End is Nigh

The RV has a kitchen, a bathroom, and a cozy sitting area. Many ups and downs later, four months of work finally paid off, and we had a brand new camper that we were both proud of.

We had one more hurdle to overcome. Insurance. We already had insurance for fire and theft, but now we needed insurance so that we could hit the road. You’d think that it is as easy as signing up, and we are ready to go, right?

Nope. We needed to certify the truck again, so off to the mechanic he went. Thankfully, this wasn’t much of a problem, and Harry passed with flying colours.

However, Harry also needed a valuation. How much was our “Royal Harry” worth? The truck itself was a good deal, but I invested a lot of materials and hours into it as well. It definitely became an investment project.

The insurance was not satisfied with pictures and receipts and wanted a quote from a professional appraiser. Thankfully, the appraiser was impressed with my work and quoted about double my investment to the insurance company. Royal Harry was insured and worth quite a bit more than before.

The final shot of the new harry!

Don’t Give Up

Even though the task was difficult and it took a lot of time, we were happy with the results. We learned a valuable lesson through this project.

If the job is difficult and how deep you are stuck in the valley, you need to keep climbing; there is always a way out.

Never ever give up. Set your mind on the goal and keep going.

There were times when we wanted to quit, but we focused on our goal, and we exceeded our own expectations. With the help of the Unseen, we have a beautiful camper, and we hope that Royal Harry will serve us for many years to come.

New Year, New Beginnings

I hope that you enjoyed my little project, but I also hope that you learned that with determination, you too can achieve what you want. Just put your heart and mind to it.

I have been working on an exciting new project for this blog. If you want to know what it is, subscribe below and don’t miss anything I post!

Have a healthy and safe 2022, and God Bless!

From Moving Truck to RV

In my last post, I talked about the beginnings of Harry’s makeover. Harry presented us with an opportunity to realize my and my wife’s lifelong dream. However, now that Harry was no more, we needed to give the truck a new look.

Keep reading about the next steps in Harry’s makeover!

Primed and Ready to Go!

Well, it wasn’t ready to go, but now that the primer was on, it was ready for the next step. I didn’t want a white truck, as that is quite boring. So I used my artistic skills to create a modern and sleek design. It turned out well if I say so myself.

The first step in this particular project was masking. No, not the COVID masks that we have these days. Masking means taping off all the parts of the vehicle that do not require painting. Or, in our case, masking the design that I wanted to add.

A Lesson Learned

On one of the nights, I learned a valuable lesson. I was running around the truck spray painting to my heart’s desire. At a certain time, I realized that the pressure was less and less with each passing moment.

We used construction lamps to light the camper, and one of the lamps was a little too close to the hose of the paint. I started investigating, and by the time that I found the problem, the hose had swelled into a ball. It was big enough to start the World Championship kick-off!

A few moments later, it exploded with a loud bang, and painting was done for the night.

We knew now to be more careful with the construction lamps, and altogether it took me four nights to finish the paint job.

A Trip Down Memory Lane

In the meantime, I was on the lookout for RV accessories. Some I ordered online, while I bought others locally. I found a door at an RV dealership in London, ON.

While we drove there, my wife kept me company in the front seat. However, on our way back, she was squished in the back because of the many purchased items for the late Harry, including a door.

To give her a break, we stopped at a Burger King for an unhealthy lunch. As we were sitting there, we thought back to an earlier time we spent at Burger King.

Let me take you there. We are looking back about 27 years. My wife was pregnant with our youngest daughter. I remember exactly where it was and what we ordered.

We both ordered a Whopper. When we sat down at our table, I saw on my wife’s face that something was amiss.

She said: “Herman, is this burger ok?”

I replied with a “Yeah, it’s good!”

A minute later, she had enough and decided that the burger was spoiled and moved to bring it back. It was easily done. She came back with a new Whopper and a big smile.

I had finished my meal in the meantime when she started again.

“Herman, this one isn’t good either.”

I went to the counter this time and asked for a third burger. The servers at the counter looked at me weird, and I just shrugged my shoulders. When I returned with the third burger, my wife didn’t like it either, so I ate it instead.

I felt a little awkward leaving Burger King and knew from that moment on not to trust a woman’s opinion when she is pregnant!

Home Sweet Home

When we finally made it home, we started making our plans and doing our research on placing windows and doors. It is a task that needs the utmost accuracy since you don’t want any leaking!

I bought a kit from Amazon to place both the windows and the door professionally. Finally, I was ready for the scary moment of cutting wholes in my new RV. I double-checked everything about ten times.

Thankfully, it wasn’t too bad. We’ve had many rainstorms since, and everything is still dry as the desert!

The End is In Sight

Finally, Harry started looking like an RV. He had a new paint job, windows, door, and rims. I also got a backup camera from my daughter, which was also installed. The outside was as good as done!

Tune in next week to read about the interior changes to Harry. But, for now, my wife and I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

God’s Blessings!

Harry’s Makeover

Last week we discussed Harry, the trusted moving truck from the company. We left our tale with the news that there was a change in ownership of the company we work for. And as expected, with the change in management came a change in rules.

Management decided to change out the fleet of vehicles, and by default, Harry was on the list. Curious about what will become of Harry? Read on to find out!

An Old Dream Becoming a New Reality

I’ve always had a dream of owning a camper, and I never had the chance to realize it. I’d sometimes walk around Harry and wonder to myself, “What if?”

Now that Harry was on the scrap list, that “What if?” became a “Could I?” It was a question I had to ask myself, but most importantly, my wife. She knows me best!

I have to confess that I am always full of ideas; some are turned into a reality, some are not. So when I wanted to suggest this new idea, I had to come up with a great story.

I decided to ask her if she would like to own a camper. It went something like this, “Honey, (It’s important to butter her up) How would you like to own a camper?

The answer was obviously yes. We were halfway there! She was excited at the prospect of owning a camper, so I said, “What about Harry?”

At this point, I thought to myself, “Why did I start this conversation?” But after a little while, we agreed to adopt our Harry and turn His Royalty into a camper.

Start From the Bottom

To be honest, this wasn’t a small task. Where to even start?

I decided that the best thing was to start from the bottom and work my way up. I bought a grinder and a wire brush to get the job done.

One thing you have to know about living in Canada, we have harsh winters with lots of snow and ice. To battle the snow, we salt our roads so that we can get from A to B. As many of you may know, salt is not the greatest for our vehicles. When salt comes into contact with the metal, it becomes rust

My job was to remove all this rust to prevent any further corrosion down the road. I’ll tell you, I am in my 60’s and as I was hammering away the rust, I could hear my wife say with every bang, “Are you sure you want to do this?”

It took two weeks of hammering, grinding, and scrubbing, but I finally got it done. I sprayed it with a protective layer to prevent it from rusting again.

Working My Way Up

The next step was the beautiful paint job of our Harry. We, unfortunately, couldn’t keep him around. I bought the needed materials and tools to sand the outside paint of the truck.

All this had to be done during the evenings, as we both still had our day jobs. Of course, customers would walk by and ask me about Harry. I would tell them that we are turning him into a camper. Some were excited, and some were skeptical.

Of course, the skeptics were not very encouraging, but I kept going. After about two weeks, Harry was no more, and the Sentinel Moving Truck was a blank page.

Overcoming a Painting Problem

At this point, we were four weeks in, and I could finally begin rebuilding the new camper. The first job was the exterior paint.

This caused a bit of a problem. First off, I needed instructions; second, I needed a place to paint.

The first problem was easily fixed. Youtube has many instructional videos on the how-tos of building a brand new camper. I bought an air compressor and a paint gun and was ready to get to work.

Unfortunately, the second problem was a little harder to fix. A place to paint! As you may know, spray painting is a smelly business

We had a beautiful spot in the loading bay of the storage facility, but because our customers can access their units until 11 PM, we had to wait until the doors were locked. This meant that I could only paint at night.

Thankfully, my wife stood by me. She knew that she was needed in order to keep me going. This project was far from over. So we spent two nights priming and resanding the truck to get a smooth base for the new paint job.

Introducing: Harry!

It was April 2015 when we loaded up the U-Haul and left Kingston to move to Stouffville. Stouffville is a little north of Toronto, ON, commonly known as the GTA, or the Greater Toronto Area. We left a fairly small city to move to the outskirts of the biggest city of Canada.

Hard Choices, Good Decisions

While we were in Kingston, we worked for a private storage facility. Over a few years, we gained extra experience to apply to other facilities, and we were able to receive better compensation in Stouffville. The choice was, in this way, easier.

Of course, it was difficult for us to leave our family and friends, and the company we left was also unhappy with our departure. Thankfully, the new employer welcomed us with open arms.

That’s how it is when you make choices in life. Choices have an impact and consequences on you and those around you. There is always someone who isn’t happy, but for us, it looked like the right thing to do.

New Employment

Sentinel Storage, our new employer, was for us an improvement, not only financially, but it was an excellent company to work for. Their motto was, “If you are good for the company, the company will be good for you.” And that proved to be true.

One of the things that made working for this company so great was our Operational Manager, Karen. If you are reading this, Karen, we miss you! She was always ready to help and support and found a solution to every problem.

Just to be clear for those who are unfamiliar, self-storage facilities like these exist for overflow of personal or business items. For example, sometimes the units are rented when people are between houses and are renting a house elsewhere. This overflow, whether it is a few personal items or the entire household, is then stored at storage facilities.

Our Harry

Sentinel Storage provided a moving truck for these clients for one of the best prices we have seen so far. This meant that it was used quite often, of course, by both businesses, households, and anything in between.

The truck was also called “Harry.” This was because it had the company’s logo on the side, a sentinel that had similarities to Prince Harry.

The truck was often used, and the company took great care of Harry. He was maintained well and was treated like royalty. You have to be careful with those royals; you better give them the respect they deserve (or demand!)

News from Head Office

2017 came around, two years after we moved to Stouffville. We were invited for a meeting at the head office in Edmonton.

Head office rented a location at the West Edmonton Mall to house all the managers across Canada. The West Edmonton Mall is one of the biggest malls in the world. It is a beautiful place to visit, with hotels, pools, and even a theme park attached. This is because Edmonton is one of the coldest cities in the world, especially of that size.

The mall is a great place to visit with the wife and kids; just make sure you keep that credit card in your pocket!

Back to the meeting, it was, unfortunately, a shocking one. Sentinel Storage was sold to another company called Access Storage. This was sour news for everyone involved since Sentinel Storage was run like a family. There was support from all sides, and to be sold to a giant made everyone wonder what they should do.

About halfway through 2017, the transfer was complete. Everything was now in the name of Access Storage. Including our Harry. He didn’t have any issues with the transfer; our Royal Harry didn’t care who held the scepter. He was the royal one anyway.

You can read what happened to Harry in the next blog!

A Bitter-Sweet Memory in Cheticamp

Cheticamp is a wonderful place to visit for many reasons. I have a memory of the town that I won’t forget easily. I’ll tell you all about it in a little bit. Many visitors decide to stay in the lovely town for whale watching. An event that brings in tourists from all over the world.

Cheticamp and Me: A Time I Won’t Forget

After our insightful conversation, we decided to keep going. We had about 20 more minutes to go until we reached our destination. As we drove through the town, a memory sprung up that would stay with me forever.

About two years ago, our family paid a visit to Canada. We had a wonderful time driving out East and made many memories. Of course, one of the items on our collective bucket list was to experience the famous whale watching.

We booked a day ahead for $50/person to guarantee a spot. As expected, the boat was pretty full, and all on board were excited to see some ocean friends. The tour was to be about 1.5 hrs.

To give you some context on the geographic location of Cheticamp, it is obviously on the coast. However, it is protected by a peninsula, giving the water of the harbour calm and peaceful waters.

Out On Sea

After about 15 minutes on the boat, the waters became a little angrier. Now, I have to confess, I’ve never been a fan of swings, merry-go-rounds, or any of the sorts that you can find on fairs. As a result, I have issues keeping everything inside after a while.

It goes without saying that I do not have sealegs. After about 20 minutes of bobbing up and down, my wife asks me if I am ok. Of course, I say, “Yep, no problems, I’m just a little queasy.” However, after 40 years of marriage, you get to know a person quite well. I couldn’t hide from her that I was, as a matter of fact, not ok.

The waves became rougher and rougher, as well as my stomach. I looked around me and saw another gentleman with his head overboard and a few others looking a little green. Their loved ones were rubbing their back in a poor attempt to comfort them. Spoiler alert: It didn’t.

I heard somewhere that bananas are a good cure for seasickness, but where does one find bananas on the Nova Scotian shore? You don’t. I asked my wife if she had anything to eat. Now, those who know my wife know that she always carries a purse full of handy items. Toothpicks, chapstick, some wet wipes, after five kids, she’s learned a few tricks.

She came to the rescue with some “Fisherman’s Friends.” An appropriate candy for this situation, right?  I kept eating them, one by one, hoping that we would see something so that we could head back to shore.

In the meantime, an hour had passed, and the only animals we saw were the seagulls screaming for some attention around our boat. We were a little disappointed because we expected a little more. We spot seagulls in every fast-food parking lot of North America.

Thankfully, shortly after, the other folks on the boat got excited and pointed towards a group of brown whales. We were told that they were pilot whales. A playful type of whale that is a little bigger than dolphins. Unfortunately, we didn’t see any big whales, as expected, but we had fun nonetheless.

Back to Shore

At this point, I had gone through the bag of Fisherman’s Friends in an attempt to keep everything down. Thankfully, we headed back after our whale friends moved on.

A short, or long for some, 30 minutes later, we arrived back in the harbour of Cheticamp. There was at least one person that was happy to be back. You guessed it; it was me!

Opting Out This Time

This time around, my wife and I decided to forego this lovely experience and just enjoy the shoreline on solid ground. So we kept going towards our destination, “The Skywalk Trail.”

You can take two routes on this trail, the shorter 3.5 KM and the 7.5 KM. We chose the latter. After a little while, we arrived at a bay with a beautiful view. We were on a plateau high on the cliffs, about 500 meters. De plateau is connected with wooden stairs for tourists to take their time and enjoy the view.

As we were sitting there, looking over the stunning view, we saw a family of pilot whales! We made the right choice not to repeat the past. We were able to enjoy the view, the whales, and everyone kept their meals inside them that day.

A Brief History Lesson

Just as we were about to leave, we met a few ladies who came out to enjoy the view as well. We quickly discovered that one of the ladies was a granddaughter of a chief of the indigenous population in Nova Scotia.

The history between the indigenous and early immigrants is a painful one. However, she explained that the indigenous peoples helped the newcomers when the first settlers arrived, and mutual respect was established as both people groups learned to live with each other.

Nova Scotia: Canada’s Ocean Playground

Once we rested a little, we headed back to the car. We made some beautiful memories, remembered some old ones from Cheticamp, and were refreshed and rejuvenated to continue on.

I hope that you enjoyed this little taste of both Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact me. Also, don’t forget to sign up for the next blog!

An Inspired Conversation: Our Creator

The Netherlands is home to some of the most famous artists of all time. Have you heard of Rembrandt, Vermeer, Van Gogh? There are many works on display, each with its unique creator at the Rijksmuseum.

I am proud of my roots and would highly recommend visiting the Rijksmuseum when you are in the neighborhood.

The Bigger Picture

When looking at a painting from someone like Van Gogh, it is important to take a step back and look at the bigger picture that the artist meant to convey.

Let’s go back to our little spot in Nova Scotia. We saw it all from a distance, the waves crashing against the rocks below, the moon making a rare appearance during the day, and the horizon far away.

To see it all in one big picture, we were made aware of the bigger plan that the Creator had in mind. A plan with our 7 billion people on this planet. It says in the first book of the Bible:

“Let us make man in Our Image, according to Our likeness, let them have dominion…”¹

And in Genesis 1:27, He says:

“So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him, male and female He created them.”

God’s intention for humanity is to have dominion over the earth. To reflect His light; whether we acknowledge, know it, or don’t give it a thought. God’s plan is and was to provide humanity a place in His creation and to have dominion over the earth.

Analyzing the Bigger Picture

Now, do we do this? Do we reflect the image of our Creator? Or did we lose contact somewhere along the way?

It became an interesting conversation there on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. As we talked, it became evident that everyone has a purpose, and we fall short. The first man lost his purpose to express the riches and glory of God in creation.

While the first man lost this privilege, we need to ask ourselves how we get back what was once lost. The simple answer is that no one can get it back unless we are restored to the original state—the state of reconciliation between man and his Creator.

You might say, “I never lost dominion. I handle my own affairs; I don’t need a Creator to do this.” But there are 7 billion people on earth, and each one of us has lost the connection with God.

Many religions in the world are looking for reconciliation and peace of heart. We have Islam, Hinduism, the most conservative forms of Christianity, and everything in between. All of these religions are looking for a solution to find the connection with the source, whether they know it or not.

Connecting With the Creator

They may not realize that the connection with their Creator is needed; however, everyone is looking to re-connect with the source of life.

The thing that the first man lost is something that every person searches for to get back. A soaring bird is happiest to be in its place that was created for him, the sky. A fish needs to be in the water, or it will die. A plant needs to be firmly rooted in the soil, or it will die too.

Disconnect man with his source, and he will surely die.²

Is there a possibility for returning that connection to its original source? We will search for the answer together over the next little while.

Going Upstream

Going Upstream is never in a hurry. Upstream is always harder and slower than going with the flow. But you know what? You are unique; you are different than the others, but it requires hard work. Just remember that the main thing is to keep swimming.

We Keep Going

My wife made some delicious sandwiches, ask my kids; they will tell you that she makes excellent food.  Our conversations served as a beautiful side of spiritual nourishment. With an empty picnic basket and full bellies, we continued on our adventure and admired the handy work of our Creator.

If you know us, you’ll know that we love driving. One of the big reasons is that we carry out fruitful conversations. Of course, the Cabot Trail is an inspiration itself, but we also planned to walk the Skyline Trail, a 7.5 km with a beautiful ocean view.

The following blog will tell you all about this!

Our Vacation to Nova Scotia

Have you been to Nova Scotia before? It is one of the most exciting places in Canada. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, tourism plummeted by 84% in 2020. We were fortunate enough to pack our bags and book a gorgeous place in St. Peters.

First Stop: A Taste of Farm Life

It was almost two years ago when we packed our bags for a vacation. We originally planned to go to the Netherlands, but unfortunately, the pandemic had different plans.

Nova Scotia was on our bucket list, so we decided to give it a go. Instead of leaving right away, though, we spent a week taking care of our oldest son’s hobby farm. It was an exciting experience, and we enjoyed many beautiful days taking care of the goats, chickens, cows, you name it; they have it all.

Journey Before Destination

The journey to Nova Scotia is gorgeous. Nature has always been one of the main reasons we love Canada, but New Brunswick tops it. The beauty of the countless lakes and miles of outstretched, untouched forest is incomparable.

We noticed that the people are much friendlier and relaxed compared to the GTA. It shows that the hustle and bustle of the city can have negative effects on people.

Not only that, but we also noticed that the pandemic was barely noticeable. We entered a Tim Hortons with a mask, and everyone looked as if we had some sort of disease.

We came across a hotel along the Trans Canada Highway called Amsterdam Inn. Of course, this called our name. The owners were Dutch, and we had the pleasure of meeting them. We chit-chatted in our mother language and felt at home at this family-owned hotel.

After a good night’s sleep and a lovely breakfast, we continued our trip towards St. Peter’s, Nova Scotia.

Entering Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia handled the pandemic a little differently. We would stop at a grocery store or gas station, and if they saw that we were from Ontario, they would avoid us like the plague. The otherwise maskless society would switch in a heartbeat, and the 6 feet rule became 12 feet.

Perhaps we should have worn t-shirts that said: “Fully Vaccinated.”

Our journey ended in St. Peters, where we rented a beautiful cottage with an ocean view. It was a gorgeous location. It’s always a little nerve-wracking when you book beforehand, but we couldn’t be happier with the spot.

The Happy Place in St. Peter's, Nova Scotia

Touring the Cabot Trail

We planned to rest for a day and then continued towards the world-famous Cabot Trail. It is known to be one of the most beautiful scenic routes in North America.

On the one side, you have the ocean roaring with all its might, while on the other, you have the sloping hills and the serene nature of Cape Breton. It is such a great experience. You are awestruck with each turn of the road.

Skyline Trail on the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton

I read somewhere in a book:

For the Lord is the great God,

the great King above all gods.

In His hand are the depths of the earth,

and the mountain peaks belong to Him.

The sea is His, for He made it,

and His hands formed the dry land.*

We found a beautiful spot to eat our lunch that had a view of the ocean with clear skies as far as the eye could see.

At one point, my wife noticed that the moon was displaying its full glory. It was so clear and beautiful how the moon reflected the sun back to earth.

I read that He gave us the sun to guide us by day and the moon for the night. However, this was in the middle of the day and so close by.

The ocean in front of us with her mighty waves, the sun sky high touching and searching everything, and the moon who took this opportunity to demand her place in this creation. It was a picture I’ll never forget.

The Beginnings of a Deeper Meaning

This picture that was painted before us sparked an interesting conversation. However, there is a deeper meaning behind this painted picture in front of us.

I will discuss that in my next post. Sign up to receive the next post directly in your email!
